Early last year, Martha Deevy, a senior vice president at Charles Schwab in charge of online trading, found that her job responsibilities had increased. For the first half of the day, she ran Schwab.com from her office. After lunch, she went down to the tech-service floor and responded to customer e-mails for four hours. Then she went back up to her office for another four hours. This went on for months. "It was all hands on deck," she says. "If you had a Series 7 license and could type, you were answering e-mail."
