In the mid-1990s, B.V. Jagadeesh and his partner K.B. Chandrasekhar hadn't considered obtaining venture funding in Chicago for the Internet data center startup they were building 2,000 miles west of it in Silicon Valley. Chicago venture firms were known for large leveraged buyouts, telecommunications and service industry work, not for bootstrapping early-stage companies-especially those with an Internet bent. For six months or so, Jagadeesh and Chandrasekhar, founders of what would become Exodus Communications, knocked on as many doors as they could along Sand Hill Road.
