From the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, education was a darling of high-technology investment. Ranging from high-tech startups based on the Seymour Papert Logo project at MIT to the hundreds of millions spent by Bill Norris at Control Data on the Plato program, to the disastrous expenditures at the World Institute for Computer Assisted Teaching (WICAT), the United States saw an unrelenting flow of capital into technology for education, both hardware and software. Some remnants of that effort remain today: Plato's educational development tools gave rise to Authorware, which became part of Macromedia.
