There are serious issues delaying 313 networks in Europe, creating problems for wireless operators, equipment makers, and the embryonic 3G software and content industries. But these problems are not the end of the world: 3G will happen, and money will get made-eventually. People should not expect 3G to be a big revenue stream for another two years, at least. For 2002 and 2003, European 3G networks are little more than pilots aimed at early adopters. It is partly because of technical issues and partly because the infrastructure and initial application rollout are expensive. Europe spent $157 billion on 3G last year. In addition, operators do not have billing and service models worked out yet, and wireless technology simply takes time to settle down.
