Every summer the UK Cadillac Car Club meets for its annual convention. Dozens of Cadillacs and their owners descend on a drab, provincial English town—Southend, Luton, Rochester, Blackpool, Birmingham—and for a weekend transform it into Main Street U.S.A. Beautifully polished El Dorados, Coupe Devilles, Broughams, and Fleet-woods cruise up and down the high street, past the Marks and Spencers, the BHS, past the KFC, Burger King and McDonalds, with stereos humming to the tunes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bill Hailey. To run a Caddy in Britain, where gas costs $4.00 a gallon and parking requires the use of at least two bays, demands a remarkable level of commitment. Not only is a Cadillac costly to run, hunting down spare parts to keep the dream on the road is time consuming, and driving 21 feet of Detroit metal through Britain's many cluttered, narrow, streets tortuous.
