摘要

In the last two Italian editions of Roma Moderna: Da Napoleone I al XXI secolo, Italo Insolera (1929-2012) suggested subtly adjusting the book's title by adding a punctuation mark: 'Roma Moderna?'. It probably was his ultimate critical suggestion. A planned Rome exists in modern times, but does a Rome conceived as a modern city really exist? Alternating between exhaustive documentation and critical inquiry, this book, first published in 1962, is already a classic on urban history in Italy. And, with this brilliant edition, entitled Modern Rome: From Napoleon to the Twenty-First Century, Cambridge Scholars Publishing has introduced it to the English-speaking academic world. So far, it has received the Gerd Albers Award 2019 from ISOCARP (the International Society of City and Regional Planners). , In Roma Moderna, Insolera chronicles the vicissitudes of urban planning in Rome since the early nineteenth century. He starts in 1811 with the decrees signed by Napoleon Bonaparte for I'embellissiment de Rome, which represented the first guidelines for turning Rome into the capital of an embryonic state of Italy. The book covers the period up to 2011, the date of the last edition published in Italian, thus completing a review of exactly 200 years. In Modern Rome, added to the foreword and introduction, 30 chapters and the conclusions of the last Italian edition, is a presentation to the English-speaking reader, written by the editors, and two texts as an epilogue (one by Vezio De Lucia, the other by Paolo Berdini). All of this is reinforced by the remarkable work of the editors, who have also added new supporting graphic content, an index of places and a brief description of the local and national system of government in Italy, as well as the translation of a list of mayors of Rome since 1870, a glossary of Italian urban planning terms and an index of names that were included in the last Italian edition.
