This collection of essays uses case studies from around the world to analyse issues of urban planning and design through a focus on how these state-level practices are expressed, contested and subverted through the actions of local communities. With a particular emphasis on how key places and spaces are remembered, reconstructed or forgotten through myriad forms of spatial expression from a variety of actors and participants, this interdisciplinary volume seeks to dissect and understand the politics of collective and personal memory in relation to the 'moral geography') and the continuation of former social ties in the villages of origin.
