Like many engineers, 30-year-old Rocco Paduano had always specialized in one area—in his case, it was aerospace engineering. He was trained in the field as an undergraduate, then as a graduate student at Worcester Polytechnic in Massachusetts. And at every job he took after earning his master's in 1993, from designing tunnels to missiles, Paduano focused on his area of expertise. But after he was passed over for a promotion more than a year ago, he had an epiphany. "As a traditionally trained engineer, I couldn't see the big picture at the companies I was working for," he says. "I realized I needed to be more well-rounded to get ahead." So Paduano went back to graduate school—and not for an M.B.A. He enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's four-year-old System Design and Management program at the School of Engineering and the Sloan School of Management.
