For a 21st-century journey around the world, an unlocked SIM-card-ready iPhone or Android device is indispensible. It is important that the phone is SIM-card-ready, because this allows you to buy a new SIM card in each country and get a local number. If you buy a phone in the U.S., some networks do not use SIM cards, so your smartphone may not fit the bill. Also, be sure that the phone is unlocked. In the U.S., many phone companies will sell you a "locked" phone that only works on their network. This means that you will be unable to use a different SIM card in the phone as you travel. If your phone is locked, you can pay a hacker to "jailbreak" your locked smartphone, but this usually voids the warranty and support. You are better off to buy a phone that comes unlocked. In just about everywhere else in the world, phones automatically are sold unlocked. In the U.S., you can find unlocked phones at independent shops or on the resale market.
