Years ago, author Robert Fulghum assured us that we had "learned everything we need to know in kindergarten," and there is much to be said for his perspective. I will springboard from his insights, and posit that, as a marriage and family therapist, I would pick fourth grade as a unique point of expertise. In fourth grade, at least the first half of the year or so, a certain miraculous blend of circumstances exists. We have a room full of children who, on the one hand, often still have one foot solidly in the magical world of childhood. Odds are, a lot of them still believe in Santa, and about one in 10 has the occasional, little-kid nocturnal bedwetting event. They still care about grown-up approval. They are able to collaborate with one another on games and projects. They can get hung up on one thing to the point of obsession. On the other hand, their intellectual, motor skill, and moral development are advanced enough to allow for complex activities. Unlike their kindergarten kin, they are a bit more able to roll with change. Kinder-gartners still may be stuck in the normal, but adult-maddening "Goldie Locks" phase of the preschool years-made famous by the fairy tale in which routines, food, etc., must be "just right." When grown-ups get stuck there, we call it obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Most fourth-graders are past this stage.
