Setting aside truisms about culture gaps and the evidence from Jay Leno's public service, Jaywalking, what are we to say about a situation where college students who live within one hour of MacDill Air Force Base-CentCom to locals and the military alike-interrupt a class discussion to ask, "Who is General David Patraeus?' As evidenced by Leno's work, there are plenty of adults just as disengaged. (This comprises your future jury of your peers, so behave yourselves.) Something that seems essential to some apparently is inconsequential to others.Humans probably always have bemoaned the irresponsibility and silliness of the youth among them. Adolescents embrace trends to assert their difference from their parents. Trends come and go; the core of a culture remains. Aspects of what seemed to be passing fads cling like barnacles and become part of the core. Thus it has ever been-until relatively recently.
