Alternating authentications to match the situational context of an intelligent communicating vehicle

The utilized authentication framework in a transportation network definitely influences the network size (number of vehicles) and vehicles' anonymity degree. Some frameworks can accommodate larger network size trading off anonymity level; other authentications offer superior anonymity traits given sparse networks only. Addressing such knowledge gap, we introduce a context-aware authentication interchanging scheme. Every specific time interval, each networked vehicle checks its context. For a crowded neighborhood, the vehicle utilizes a low-communication-overhead authentication, while for a sparse neighborhood, the vehicle alters to more anonymous authentication. The frameworks of interest are the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) authentication, the Group Signature (GS) authentication, and a newly developed Identity-Based Cryptographic (IBC) framework. The scheme's proof of concept is validated by a formed argument applying the strategies of attacker games and forking lemmas. The scheme's effectiveness is analyzed for two communication scenarios; the results show that by alternating authentications, better performance is achieved in comparison to the state of having single secure authentication throughout the network lifetime. The approach is computably fast and does not compromise the autos' anonymity.
