This new 'Pevsner' for Suffolk, the third edition, has a much higher level of scholarship than the second, and as a result is greatly expanded into two volumes, East and West Suffolk, which between them have over 1300 pages plus 128 pages of coloured pictures compared with the second edition, a single book of 555 pages and 64 pages of black-and-white photographs. Not only that, the pages are bigger, 20 per cent taller and 10 per cent wider, and the book no longer fits into a coat pocket. The second edition, published in 1974, largely made corrections to Pevsner's 1961 first edition, taking account of the many comments received from the public. This latest edition is a substantial rewrite and expansion produced by the architectural historian James Bettley who revisited all the towns and villages in the county.
