Cecilia Hurley's Monuments For The People is about the creation, dissemination and reactions to Aubin-Louis Millin's five volumes of essays on French national monuments: the Antiquites nationales, ou Recueil de monuments pour servir a l'histoire generate et particuliere de l'Empire francois .... Hurley's approach is above all contextual; she skilfully places the Antiquites in the historical, literary and antiquarian milieu of the second half of the eighteenth century. Her focus is historiographic and her goal is to offer a 'more balanced' approach to Millin by amplifying the content of the Antiquites in light of Millin's other and contemporary publications. In this respect Hurley's book is a splendid example of interdisciplinary scholarship.
