I note that the Jan/Feb 2017 edition of Vertiflite records that the Mil Mi-24LL has achieved a milestone in respect of speed for a helicopter, exceeding that achieved by G-LYNX in 1986. I welcome the clarity of message that helicopters and compound helicopters should be considered as two distinct configurations, something that the Sporting Code of the [Fédération Aéronautique Internationale] has yet to reflect, and I note that the article is clear in respect of the unverified nature of the claims therein reported. However, I would like to point out that the Mil 24LL has been seen with wings attached and I am unaware of any indication that the reported speed of 219.8 kt [407 km/h] was achieved as a helicopter or as a lift-compounded helicopter. I must assume that the speed quoted is a ground speed but I can see no indication that this was an averaged value taken from two runs in opposite directions over a specified distance. Nonetheless, I thought that your readers might wish to know that the peak ground speed achieved by G-LYNX, as ratified by the Royal Aero Club, was 222 kt [411 km/h]. Similar speeds were achieved during the work-up flights but these were not subject to independent verification and so cannot be sensibly claimed.
