The first flying CH-53K Engineering Demonstration Model, EDM-1, hovered on Oct. 27, launching a flight test program that will validate heavy-lift helicopter structures, dynamics, engines and flight controls. Four CH-53K EDM aircraft will log about 2,000 hours over the next two-and-a-half years. Significantly, the fly-by-wire King Stallion took off on its 30-minute inaugural flight at the Sikorsky Development Flight Center in West Palm Beach, Florida with a full load of flight control software. US Marine Col. HankVanderborght, H-53 Heavy Lift Program Manager at the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) at Patuxent River, Maryland, noted, "If you look at NAVAIR and Sikorsky Aircraft history from a rotorcraft development perspective, that's a first... to have 100% functionality in software in any aircraft in first flight. Generally, we start flying and add functionality as the program is underway."
