Shears, Moments and Torsions: The CH-53K Static Test Article validates the hybrid composite structure of the Marine Corps Heavy Lift Replacement Helicopter
At the new CH-53K King Stallion ground test facility in Stratford, Connecticut, the '53 King- or Kilo-model Static Test Article (STA) gives Sikorsky and Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) engineers proof of safe structures before the Heavy Lift Replacement helicopter flies in early 2015. NAVAIR CH-53K program manager Col. Hank Vanderborght explains,"We set the design criteria of the aircraft; we designed what tests will be conducted on the STA …That translates into an airworthiness clearance for the aircraft which translates into the operational envelope for the aircraft."
