Industry and government leaders gathered at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Route Traffic Control Center in January 2010 to ceremoniously jumpstart the beginning use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) in the Gulf of Mexico. The satellite-based ADS-B was already making inroads in the fixed-wing world, with carriers such as UPS Airlines leading the way, but now rotorcraft operators had access to the technology that could efficiently and safely separate and manage aircraft flying over the Gulf, which has a surface area of 932,000 square miles (1.5 million square kilometers).
