One of the worst kept secrets over the past several years had been that Bell Helicopter was working on a new commercial helicopter. What exactly it was, however, was another matter altogether. In January 2011, Bell announced to its employees in an internal communique that it was officially launching the Magellan program,"tasked with bringing a new product to the marketplace in response to our future customer needs." Speculation ran rife, with sources opining on everything from a new entry-level single turbine, to a single engine 429, to a retooled 412.
