MAKS 2009 showed that Russian rotorcraft developments are turning the corner. More than two decades after their first flights, the Havoc and Hokum are now both in service, with advanced capabilities nearing the end of development. New innovations in unmanned rotorcraft, gyroplanes and personal helicopters are starting to gain ground. Upgrades to venerable lines are seeking to make a seriousrnbid for commercial helicopter demand, and military development programs for high speed transport and strike helicopters are nearing initiation. The industry consolidation into Russian Helicopters (see accompanying article) appears to be paying dividends. But to compete in the global marketplace - or even within the cash-strapped Russian military - Russian Helicopters must not only have impressive products, but they must also be competitively priced. In fact, Prime Minister Putin has stated, "I know that our defense industry is able to create miracles, but I want to make a point that we don't need every miracle, just those that allow us to increase our defensive potential and are affordable in price.
