With those words, history was made as the F-35 aircraft known as BF-01 made the first vertical landing of an F-35 Lightning II at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland on March 18, 2010. Lead Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) Test Pilot Graham Tomlinson of BAE said "Today's vertical landing onto a 95-foot square pad showed that we have the thrust and the control to maneuver accurately both in free air and in the descent through ground effect." Not since the summer of 2001 had a Joint Strike Fighter performed vertical flight operations. In addition to the vertical landing, the aircraft has also been demonstrating its ability to perform slow landings and short take-offs.
