At a recent meeting with NASA Associate Administrator Dr. Jaiwon Shin and NASA Director of Aviation Safety, Dr. Amy Pritchett, Dr. Pritchett offered (with encouragement from Dr. Shin) to serve on the Executive Committee of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST). Most of you will recognize this as the concerted effort kicked off in 2005 by Somen Chowdhury and others to reduce the worldwide accident rate, for both civil and military helicopters, by 2016 by 80 percent. The addition of Dr. Pritchett to the IHST team could help put NASA support behind future human factors and safety technology initiatives to improve helicopter safety.
