Understanding past military technological successes is crucial to defense science and technology investment and management. With this dictum in mind, the authors embarked on the recently-completed Project Hindsight Revisited series of reports at the National Defense University. The purpose of these studies was to provide Dr. Tom Killion, the Army Science and Technology (S&T) Executive, with a retrospective look at technology development for major Army weapons systems. Hindsight Revisited covered the Abrams main battle tank, the Apache attack helicopter, and the Stinger and Javelin man-portable missiles. The effort was inspired by the OSD-sponsored 1969 Project Hindsight effort, which similarly reviewed the development of numerous U.S. military weapons systems across the Services.
