It may say something about the US rotorcraft industry that while Bell, Boeing, and Sikorsky greeted the opening session of the AHS Forum with CEO engineers, Lockheed Martin and Eurocopter sent attorneys and AgustaWestland North America a salesman. Straight Talk from the CEOs at the 61st annual forum gave attendees insight into how the major rotorcraft companies see their largest market segment — the US military. Boeing vice president of Army rotorcraft programs Mike Tkach summarized, "Our customers are requesting fewer new products from us, but they're asking increased capability from us." Military program manager briefings meanwhile showed how much customers expect to enhance legacy designs. Navy Seahawk program manager CAPT Paul Grosklags went so far as to say, "We need to focus on capabilities. The platforms will take care of themselves." That statement brought happy murmurs of agreement from systems integrators in the audience, but it underscored the challenges facing the US rotorcraft technology base. Though the Global War on Terror is filling factories, Boeing's Mike Tkach observed that the Department of Defense still plans to spend as much on the F/A-22 fighter as it will spend on all of its rotorcraft programs combined. The Joint Heavy Lift requirement that will advance the vertical lift state of the art is just in the concept definition stage.
