In 1950, Bell Aircraft was selected as the winner of a competition to fulfill the Navy's requirement for a large helicopter equipped with a dipping-sonar and operating from anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft carriers. The aircraft was designated the HSL (H for helicopter, S for ASW and L for Bell). The HSL was not only twice as big as any helicopter that Bell had built to date, it was also a tandem rotor, a configuration with which the company had no prior experience. If these technical challenges were not enough, during the design and fabrication of the prototypes, Bell moved its helicopter division from Buffalo, New York to Fort Worth, Texas. As a result, development was prolonged, but eventually resulted in the qualification and production of one of the largest and most powerful helicopters of its day.
