Though pandemic precautions forced the Vertical Flight Society's 76th Annual Forum & Technology Display online, the global vertical flight community continued to exchange ideas on vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology, manufacturing and markets. The virtual Forum showed again that rotorcraft makers and users adapt to the unexpected. With an in-person annual colloquium blocked by COVID-19, VFS Executive Director Mike Hirschberg welcomed the Forum 76 audience to a cyber gathering with 1,250 global attendees to consider 230 technical papers in 39 technical sessions. The agile online venue also hosted 29 VIP presenters, a self-produced Grand Awards Ceremony video and a virtual exhibit hall with "booth-side" technical briefings and live chats with subject matter experts. Two pre-Forum short courses covered electric VTOL aircraft design and model-based system engineering. In his overview of flight control research progress, the 40th Annual VFS Alexander A. Nikolsky Lecturer and Army Aviation and Missile Center senior technologist Dr. Mark Tischler reminded his VFS audience, "Collaboration is the key. We need to interact with other researchers, with other cultures. This opens up new ways of thinking and new ways of problem-solving."
