Of more than 270 Bell 505 Jet Ranger X helicopters delivered since 2017, a handful fly with law enforcement agencies. "It's two or three percent of the fleet right now," conceded Model 505 marketing manager Matt James, "but there are a lot of tenders out right now." What Bell classifies as its "short light single" helicopter already patrols with powerful electro-optic, mission management and communications systems. James observed, "Those are the same pieces of equipment that would be on a Bell 429 or Airbus 145 that costs three, four, five times as much." With Model 505 operating costs around $450 per flight hour, the 3,680-lb (1.7-t) helicopter with modern systems has big potential with police and sheriff departments sensitive about spending. James explained, "They can have more availability - hours that fit into the city's budget - and still do their missions."
