According to General Statistics Office, in the first five months of 2005, total two-way trade exchange value between Vietnam and Taiwan reached around US$2,028 billion, up by 28.59 per cent against the same period last year. Of the figure, Vietnam's export to Taiwan was put at US$270 million, up by 18.65 per cent. Vietnam's import from Taiwan was valued at US$1,757 billion, increasing 30.28 per cent. This means that Vietnam's import value from Taiwan was 6.5 fold higher than the export turnover and the gap between export and import widened by 32.6 per cent over last year's figure.
