The first decade of the 21st Century has seen undersea warfare fall to an unprecedented low estate, a situation probably not matched since the early 1930s. This is a direct result of the focus of military attention being on prosecuting the war against various Islamic terrorist groups scattered around the world during the current period. These operations have been land warfare on a variety of scales, and both research and production funding has been directed to the equipment and systems required. This has coincided with an era in which a competent and capable enemy with the potential of using undersea warfare has not been in evidence. The inevitable result has been that undersea warfare funding has been cut right back.rnDuring the 1970s and 1980s, undersea warfare was very close to being at the top of most maritime forces' priority list. The threat of the Soviet submarine fleet focused attention on anti-submarine operations while the hazards posed by minefields used to blockade ports and attrite naval assets received dedicated attention.
