Maintenance of the Russian Project Number system is now the responsibility of the Krylov Central Research Institute, although the other bureaus sometimes take it on themselves to assign project numbers, which are technically invalid. Contrary to many years of research in the West, there is no deliberate rule or logic in the assignment of project numbers. This is to maintain secrecy. There are, however, some overall guidelines that reflect the ship's displacement and whether the ship is a submarine. The system was changed at some point after 1980, with surface ships receiving a five-digit number ending in 0, and all subsequent versions assigned five-digit numbers ending in 1 through 9. In this new system, the correct expression of project numbers should not include a dot. The use of letters in surface ship project numbers was discontinued at this time and replaced by the five-digit system. The submarine design bureaus (Rubin, Malakhit, Northern, Zelenodolsk) sometimes violate this rule and have continued the use of letters. Designs intended purely for export may also retain letters.
