Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is seeking input from the FDA on the idea of requiring foreign drug manufacturers to pay registration fees to fund more inspections of their facilities. In a letter to HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt and FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, Grassley notes that medical device makers outside the U.S. are required to pay registration fees to the FDA. He says requiring registration fees for manufacturers of the drugs "may help bolster the FDA's inspection capacity."
