Zero waste is a concept which had a revival just a few years ago when Germany announced the political target of making landfills obsolete by the year 2020. Many kinds of industrial waste might be recycled, smart ways of closing loops have been found and more are still to be found. The real challenge is the management of residual waste as well as other types of heterogeneous waste. Matter cannot be destroyed; it can only be converted to another form. The conversion process implies increased energy use and costs. The closer one gets to 'zero waste', the more expensive the treatment of the waste is. This cost issue lead already to the failure of that concept in the past. Despite waste avoidance and extensive separate collection of recyclables in the case of handling residual waste, the sole waste treatment process coming close to the proposed target is thermal treatment. Nevertheless thermal treatment processes end up with the generation of slag and ash - incineration residues which are to be further handled. As thermal processes lead to the concentrating of pollutants, prevention of damage to the environment becomes very important. Therefore, the issue of slag and ash recovery is extremely controversial.
