Low head dams have claimed thousands of lives in the U.S. and many more worldwide. After multiple deaths on Colorado rivers, the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR) knew it had to take action to raise public awareness of low head dam hazards. But first, it had to find them.According to the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade, there are 169,535 km (105,344 mi) of rivers and 92％ of its residents participate in outdoor recreation each year.In October 2020, the state began mapping its low head dams. Using Geographic Information System data, Google Earth, and ground truthing, the Colorado DNR was able to create an interactive map on its website, enabling recreationists to locate these hazards before heading outdoors.In June, the state took the next step, launching the Low Head Dam Safety Initiative, a publicity campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of low head dams.
