How many times have you seen another pilot stare wistfully at a passing floatplane or flying boat and mumble, "I've always wanted to get a seaplane rating." So what's holding them back? Earning the Single-Engine Sea rating may be the most enjoyable aviation training experience a pilot can have. There's just something about landing an airplane on the water-and then being able to take off-that sets seaplane flying apart from every other form of aviating. As any seaplane-rated pilot will attest, learning the skill set required to fly a seaplane safely and well is a thoroughly satisfying experience. What is not always understood outside the seaplane community is the breadth of training choices available. For example, the rating can be earned quickly-in a weekend-or combined with a true bush-flying adventure that may take a week or longer.
