A magnitude 8.5 earthquake lasting about five minutes has devastated the Northwestern United States. All mountain pass highways are down. Major airports are in ruin. All hospitals west of the Cascades are either damaged, collapsed, or overflowing with patients. And, in the aftermath of the earthquake, an 80-foot-high tsunami inundated the coast from northern California to the southern portion of Vancouver Island. With most transportation resources in disarray, emergency personnel are struggling to reach affected coastal areas. Time to call in the seaplanes. That's right, seaplanes.
