Alton Bouchard's voice came over the intercom from the back seat: "Let me have the controls, and I'll demonstrate a step turn here." The first thought that crossed my mind was that the Connecticut River in this area near Hartford, Connecticut, isn't that wide. The second thought that crossed my mind was, "Well, it is his airplane, after all." I tightened my seatbelt.rnI've step turned a few airplanes in my time and, like most seaplane pilots, I've never particularly liked step turns. But I've done turning take-offs in small lakes and winding rivers dozens of times and in a variety of airplanes. Still, the Connecticut River really isn't that wide. Since I'm writing this article for a magazine, you may have guessed that the step turn worked out-which it did, of course.
