In a preflight inspection, the fire extinguisher probably ranks as the most-often missed or under-viewed (read inspected properly) item in or on the airplane, and this goes for pilots ranging from students to high-timers. The reasons are varied. In some aircraft the fire extinguisher is located in a hard-to-view area. (In the Cessna180 I fly it is attached to the copilot seat frame where it is easy to access in flight but hard to see in the preflight inspection.) Some pilots view the fire extinguisher as something the shop is responsible for maintaining. And some pilots simply don't know what to look for when they do examine the extinguisher.
