According to those folks who keep track of these sorts of things, the summer of 2003 was much like any other for Ketchikan, Alaska. The sun moved through the season with its predestined astronomic rigidity. Children escaped from schools' clutches into freedom's waiting arms. Fish migrated, spawned, and returned to the bottom of the food chain. Families milled about according to their own particular rhythms. But buried in the effluvia of these details one small difference occurred, and that difference was me. I was to spend that season in Ketchikan. This relatively low-time pilot (1300 hours total, 200 seaplane) had been hired to fly floatplanes for one of the town's air taxi firms. So, early on the first Sunday in May, the twice-weekly Alaska Marine Highway ferry dropped me off on Ketchikan's Tongass Avenue after a bright and sunny two-day voyage.
