Decades ago, I watched a strange airplane plow through the water of a northern Canadian river. After an incredibly long run, the odd-shaped craft barely staggered airborne before fading into the horizon. Later, someone mentioned "Seabec," and I wondered why pilots would want such a marginal performer. I was wrong then, but now, with a new performance conversion, the venerable Seabee is better than ever. Republic Aviation Corporation in Farmingdale, New York, first flew its new Seabee design in 1945, and subsequently sold 118 of the 1,060 built to Canadian commercial and private owners. More than 40 years later, on July 4, 2000, a much-improved version of the Republic RC-3 Seabee called the "Robinson Special" completed a brief trial flight from Balsam Lake, 78 miles northeast of Toronto, Ontario.
