President Donald Trump has signed an executive order (EO) to create an interagency "water subcabinet" led by EPA and the Interior Department (DOI), with the goals of modernizing the nation's water infrastructure, improving water resources management, and creating job opportunities for American water workers. The Oct. 13 EO formalizes ongoing coordination among EPA, DOI, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the departments of Agriculture (USD A), Commerce (DOC) and Energy (DOE) and will aid in the implementation of the water workforce initiative announced earlier this month. In addition to supporting and enhancing workforce development, the water subcabinet will promote effective and efficient water resources management by reducing duplication between federal agencies developing water policy; develop a national water strategy to ensure the reliability of water supplies, water quality, water systems and water forecasting; and improve water infrastructure planning by promoting integrated planning and coordination for drinking water, wastewater, water reuse, water storage and delivery, and water resource management, EPA says in an Oct. 13 announcement. "Modernizing management of our Nation's water infrastructure to ensure access to safe, clean, and reliable water supplies will improve the quality of life for every American," a White House fact sheet says.
