A coalition of citizen groups plans to continue its push for EPA to restrict the use of toxic dispersants in oil spill responses, contending that changes to environmental laws are still needed to erase the legal mandate for dispersants' use even while conceding the agency's just-released proposed spill response rule revisions take steps "in the right direction." The coalition is also expressing disappointment the proposal takes no action on spills of unconventional oil such as tar sands. The Citizens' Coalition to Ban Toxic Dispersants, a collection of citizen activist groups, last spring asked the agency to make various revisions to the spill rule including an overhaul that would address spill responses to unconventional fuels such as tar sands and oil produced from hydraulic fracturing.
