The Senate Dec. 16 unanimously passed bipartisan bills to tighten standards on lead limits for drinking water pipes and to reauthorize a diesel-emissions reduction program. The lead bill, S. 3874, was co-sponsored by Environment & Public Works Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Ranking Member James Inhofe (R-OK), and other lawmakers, and won support from a broad array of environmental and industry groups. The bill lowers acceptable limits on lead in drinking-water plumbing fixtures from 8 percent — the current Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) definition of "lead free" — to 0.2 percent, and "not more than a weighted average of 0.25 percent when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of pipes and pipe and plumbing fittings and fixtures."
