In March 2014, David Maidment, University of Texas at Austin, emailed Kenneth D. Reid, American Water Resources Association (AWRA) Executive Vice President and Kenneth J. Lanfear, then Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Water Resources Association (JAWRA), with a proposal. Citing AWRA's tagline "Community, Conversation, Connections," Dr. Maidment suggested that AWRA might act as "an assembly point for discussions" on important new developments in the Open Water Data Initiative (OWDI). This issue of AWRA's Water Resources IMPACT (IMPACT) is one of the outcomes of Dr. Maid-ment's proposal. Dr. Maidment has a long standing connection to AWRA. He founded, with Ken Lanfear, the AWRA GIS and Water Resources Specialty Conference, now preparing for its ninth iteration to be held in Sacramento, California July 11-13, 2016. Dr. Maidment's contributions to hydrology and to the development of geospatial applications in water resources are immeasurable.
