摘要

"War is hell," commented General William Tecumseh Sherman back in 1880. Sergeant 1st Class John W. Lane would probably agree with the sentiment. Since last May, Lane and the rest of the Connecticut National Guard's 247th Engineer Detachment have been stationed in northern Iraq, drilling wells, making assessments, and training locals on geophysical exploration methods and the art of well drilling in the midst of a war-torn country. Lane grew up "all over the place as the son of a submarine officer. The experience of being a military youngster must have been a positive one, because Lane opted for four years of active duty military service when he graduated from high school. "I wanted a little adventure before college," says Lane. After a tour of duty in Germany and in Texas, he went on to get his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Connecticut, while continuing his military ties by serving as a well drilling supervisor in the Reserves. All told, the 39-year-old Lane has been in the service for more than 20 years.
