How do we manage growing demand for water and energy in a carbon constrained world in the cities where most of the planet's population live? This question -was addressed at the 'Managing water-related energy use in cities9 workshop in California, USA, in April, organised by Dr Jim McMahon, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Mr Steven Kenway, an Australian Fulbright Scholar from University of Queensland (and IWA member). The event brought together leading practitioners and researchers on water use in energy supply in urban areas with the objective of identifying needs and opportunities for conjunctively managing water and energy. Kenway explains:'Global commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions will continue to strengthen, so it is timely to evaluate the role that urban water management can play in reducing or exacerbating energy use.'
