The world-renowned social scientist Ulrich Beck has described late modern society as the 'risk society', as a result of our global pre-occupation with minimising personal and institutional risk, and our unrelenting individual and collective efforts to transfer risk onto others where possible. Consistent with this observation, the formal management of risks within organisations has escalated from an ad hoc but sensible thing to do, to an externally mandated compliance-driven function and a regular feature of board and executive agendas.
