They are two a penny and usually suffused with saccharine nostalgia and first love, but I confess to being a sucker for coming-of-age novels set over blisteringly hot summers. Tim Lott deals with the loss, the longing (and the heat), but does it more movingly than most and with a captivating Somerset houseboat thrown in for good measure.
