The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs favorably reported the nomination of Gus Coldebella to be general Counsel for the Department of Homeland Security on July 15.Coldebella has worked at DHS for nearly three years,including a stint as acting general counsel."I have no doubt that his impressive legal background has served him well in dealing with the wide variety of issues that face DHS every day," said Ranking Member Susan Collins (R-Maine.).Her colleague,Committee Chairman Joe Lieber-man (I-Conn.),was more critical,grilling Coldebella about his role in Hurricane Katrina."I was critical at the time of DHS's response,finding it often slow and ultimately incomplete,"said Lieberman."As Deputy General Counsel during this investigation,Mr.Coldebella arguably bears some responsibility for this inadequate response both by virtue of his position and through his direct personal involvement."
