After a four-month delay, the Department of Homeland Security has begun implementing a new voluntary program to enhance nationwide resilience in an all hazards environment by improving private sector preparedness. The Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program, which was announced on July 30, is intended to establish a common set of criteria for private sector preparedness, including disaster management, emergency management and business continuity programs. The program was mandated by Congress through a provision in last year's 9/11 Commission Act, which required DHS to implement the initiative within 210 days of the law's enactment on Aug. 7, 2007.
