Customs and Border Protection is contemplating reallocating several million dollars of the Fiscal Year 2008 budget originally put aside to deploy technology at the border in order to provide more money for physical fencing, according to CBP officials. The decision whether to reallocate the money will most likely be made sometime before the end of the current fiscal year on Sept. 30, CBP spokesman Mike Friel said last week. Friel said CBP began discussing the funding shift about the same time the virtual fence project began experiencing delays due to a July paperwork hangup with the Department of Interior, from which CBP is leasing land to build its fence. Friel also noted the confluence of rising construction costs and the decision to fully complete testing of the virtual border technology at CBP' s La Playa testing facility
